1st Spring Practice info: We will start Saturday, February 14 at the Panzer pitch. County fields do not start until March 1, but we have asked for anything open last 2 weeks of February. First game is slated for 2/28 but is dependent on field conditions (i.e. we will stay off of Lough field if it is frozen or seriously waterlogged).

Final Savannah payment of $140 is due February 1 ($240 to buy a bed outright). If you are not paid up, Kermit will sell your bed. If you have not sent your final payment Kermit will be at the banquet.

Anyone that forgets where Panzer Pitch is, directions are on the web site. Looks like the weather breaks toward the end of the week and we should be able to get a run in this Saturday with a current forecast of 40.

from OD: "I think it is time that the club does something for the community to remain a locally responsible club. How many guys are able to/interested in giving blood? It has been a while since I have seen the latest restrictions on donorship, but we should be able to come up with at least a couple of dozen donors. If we can get a sense of how many of us are candidate donors and it makes sense for Red Cross, we can consider holding a blood drive on our own or with one or two of our sponsors.

Please post up whether you are eligible and interested to give, and we'll see what we can put together. We should do it before the start of the season, since the Red Cross instructions will likely indicate that donors should give themselves at least a few days to recover blood volume before any strenuous activity.

I don't know about the karmic benefits or trying to righten the balance of the Universe, but...
1) I look at it kinda like an oil change, y ou just don't swap it out all at once - you give some away and make some new.
2) It is a cheap buzz if taken as a prelude to a couple of beers...

There you have it: a healthy reason and a deeply degenerate one - take your choice... they do need blood desperately, and it would be something to connect us to the community - the largest questions are how many units can we commit and whether it's enough for a bloodmobile, and if it is, where to park it during the drive."

Our annual end-of-year team meeting will be held TOMORROW Tuesday, 11/25 at ***8 pm** (NOT 7 PM AS PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED) at The Firehouse Grill in Fairfax.

If you have in your possession any team rugby equipment --- including some missing A- & B- side jerseys --- please bring them to the meeting and turn them into Steve Lough, Bushy, or Bryan Siltanen.

Agenda items will include Executive Officer elections, Treasurer's report, Annual Banquet, by-laws committee, off-season activities, Spring schedule, assigned duties for spring (set up, clean up, game party, etc), and reveal strong intention of moving to D2 and why, decision to be made by field and exec officers but will accept feedback, open up the floor. This is election time, so anyone can run for any office. We do not need to elect field officers at this time.

PRU DIVISION III CHAMPIONS!!!

In a repeat of our close regular season match, Suburbs prevailed 18-15 to cap off an undefeated season and claim the PRU championship over Warrenton RFC.

Thanks to all who came out and supported the team. Great end to a great season for Suburbs.

Suburbs and Warrenton now both have qualified for the MARFU Championships in April 09.

Directions to Gosling Park at Warner's Farm:
Jonathon Warner's farm is about 25 minutes south of Frederick on Rt-85/Rt-28 in Dickerson, MD. It's always a good idea to MapQuest or Google map new places for directions, the actual street address is: - 20500 Martinsburg Road, Dickerson, MD 20842.

The house can be tricky to find if you are easily distracted by the lovely countryside - watch your distances and look for the gate with a rugby ball on the post. The pitch is behind the house so go past the house and turn at the gate with the rugby ball on the post, driv e to the left of a mall barn/shed and park in the field.

Field committee volunteers will be needed to assist in field set-up.

Since it is a playoff match, field set-up parameters are a bit more important, and they will also require setting up the sideline ropes to keep touch lines cleared and keep spectators and player subs away from the pitch.

Please volunteer to assist and be at the field no later than 10 am.

from Match Secretary Kermit: North Bay is bringing 22 and committed to a 2nd match. USUHS RFC is also coming to fill in holes. They cannot commit to a full team, but they will have about 10.

BOTTOM LINE: THERE WILL BE A B-SIDE MATCH!

This coming Sunday, November 9, The 12th Annual Ambassador's Shield will be held at Trinity College starting at 9:30 AM. The annual event hosted by the New Zealand Embassy is for the promotion of rugby in the DC area and historically features a Local Area or Territorial Area Union side against a New Zealand ex-patriot side (The Embassy side). This year, the event features U19 and Old Boys preliminaries and a free youth clinic from 12-1 (no experience necessary, boys and girls welcome). All of this will be followed by a 2PM kick-off for the main event, the NZ Embassy side against the Washington Barbarians (no, I don't know who they are, but they are likely a collection of select-side caliber players from the MARFU and beyond. Details can be found here.

Savannah St. Patrick's day tour update: We have room for 19 more people (3 people have paid) in the house for Savannah and the cost is $240 per (taxes and damage fees added in the final bill) w/$100 due Saturday.

Pay the $100 to the Kerminator.

Old Boys Mini Tournament - Mark your calendars, lads! The local area Old Boys' clubs will be having a mini-tournament on November 16 (Sunday). Please respond with your interest and availability to John O'Donnell (O.D.). Everybody we have is needed to keep up the numbers and to put up a competitive side. The tournament will likely be hosted by the Geese at Jonathon Warner's farm in Dickerson, MD. This year it is expected that the teams will include the old stalwarts the Geese, the 'troons, and the SOBs, as well as a newly resurrected side of PAX River Old Boys known as the FOG (Friggin' Old Guys). All affiliated and unaffiliated players are invited to join in the day's events there will be ample time for everyone!

And last but not least: CONGRATS TO JEFF HALL WHO PROPOSED MARRIAGE TO -- AND WAS ACCEPTED BY -- CANDICE.

from Prez Jeff Bush:
Official word has come down from the D3 hierarchy. We do, indeed, play North Bay this Saturday 11/8 at home in the opening round of the Div III playoffs.

Warrenton won on Saturday and will play at West Potomac. The 2 winners advance to MARFU playoffs in the spring and play for D3 championship on 11/15. A 3rd place game is to be played because there is a chance that the PRU may pick up a third seed in MARFU.

We have home field advantage throughout the PRU playoffs.

We will be scrimmaging so we need as many people out as possible. Playoffs are only a week away and we need to get a good run in Saturday followed up by a solid week of practice. Call your buddies and make your best effort to be out the rest of the season.

Directions to the "Panzer Pitch":
The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that leads to the pitch, which is located under those high power lines.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is a part of the whole practice experience.
9. This is an HOA field and we need to respect the community.

PRACTICE TIME & LOCATION UPDATES:

Tuesday practices are still held at the turf field at Poplar Tree Park from 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm.

However, for the remainder of the Fall season, we have reserved the Word of Grace (WOG) Christian Athletic Facility (13832 Redskin Drive) turf field #1 on Wednesday, October 22nd and 29th from 9 to 10:30 pm and field #2 on Thursday November 6th and 13th from 9 to 10:30 pm.

This is the old Redskins Park complex in Herndon.

Directions:
From Route 50, take Centreville Road North toward Herndon.
Turn left on Mclearen Road.
Turn Right on Towerview Rd.
Turn Left on Redskin Drive.
The Word of Grace Church will be on your right.

NO MATCH THIS WEEKEND!

from Cap'n Tim Bucher: "Good work this weekend boys. It was a solid win with good contributions by all. With the bye this weekend and how little light we have these days, there will be no practice on Thursday. Instead we will be venturing into DC for some "team building". We'll meet at 6:30 at Fado. We'll then head over for dinner at Nando's in Chinatown. It's right off the Gallery Place Metro on 7th and H. After eating we can head back to Fado for a nightcap. Next week we will continue practice on Tuesday, but keep checking the message board for other practice times as they will most likely be changing.

from O.D. concerning Saturday's upcoming OLD BOYS match: "There has been some (limited) response on the match 10/4 at Lough Field versus the Wild Geese - this is a real, regular Old Boys' match, and we need bodies to be competitive! The OFIT (Old French International Team) side that pretty handily whipped our Club B side this weekend was beaten by the Geese the weekend before 3 tries to 1. The Geese are a very competitive side! This is a side many of us have played for and traveled with - let's give them a good hard match and enjoy the afternoon's rugby! Post up! It's now or never. I want to field a competitive side against the Geese and challenge the OFIT club to another match this fall.

Hit the message board, call your friends, let's get this side together! For the balance of the season, I am waiting on word of a Sunday slot for the Poltroons in October and we will have the mini-tournament sometime in November, but for now we have an appointment with the GEESE THIS SATURDAY! There will be enough playing time available for everyone - the current forecast is perfect for rugby... get your mouthguard into the Listerine, dust off the boots and throw a little polish on 'em, set your jaws and let's get ready to play ball!! This is a great group of guys and it should be a great game - let's put it on! Check the web site for directions. Club A side versus Warrenton As for the matrix match lead off followed by SOBs vs. Geese, and Club Bs for the final match of the afternoon - there should be plenty of rugby for everyone.

A decision was made to cancel practice yesterday based on the weather at the time (4:30), the forecast for continuing rain and the abnormal number of people who conveyed that they could not attend.

Of course, the rain let up at practice time making us look bad. I am told 11 people showed up. We apologize to anyone who was inconvenienced.

11:45 am tomorrow morning is the final cut off for payment or arrangements if you have not paid and want to be eligible for A-side - NO EXCEPTIONS!

Look for Ryan Findley or Bushy at Lough Field. The selectors will be given a dues list today to base selections on.

This is falling into the BS category at this point. Practice started 8 weeks ago.

Saturday's match versus Patuxent River RFC will be played at 1 pm at our home pitch Lough field in Lovettesville, VA . We need a field setup crew at 10:30 am, and players need to be dressed and ready to play no later than noon.

Congrats to the A-side for victory in our second MATRIX match of the season, 61-10 over Rappahannock RFC!

DUES & CIPP PAID ENFORCEMENT FOR SELECTIONS BEGINS THIS WEEK!

NO PAY, NO PLAY!

Dues are $100 for regular members, $50 for Social affiliation and new players to rugby (not new to Suburbs but new to the game of rugby). Also you must CIPP-register yourself ($35) - see Club Dues and CIPP.

Tuesday practices are held at the turf field at Poplar Tree Park from 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm, and Thursday practices are held at the "Panzer Pitch" at 6:30 pm. Directions to both locations can be found here.

ATTENTION OLD BOYS! We have our next match on Saturday 10/4 against the Wild Geese. The match will occur between club As and Bs games versus Warrenton - we will need EVERYONE! The Geese travel deep and play good ball together. The Saturday schedule may diminish their numbers a bit, but they will certainly bring us all we can handle if we don't show up en masse! Let's put one on for the club side to see how the Old Boys do it... it should be a great day.

Mom and baby are doing fine and at home recovering with the help of grandma. I'll be out to practice as soon as I can, but I don't want to be asleep on my feet with Panzer or someone running at me.

To get there from Rt. 95, take the exit at Massaponix, then Rt. 1 north until you hit Mine Rd.
Take a right on Mine Rd., then a left on Falcon Dr. after about a quarter mile or so.
When you get to Falcon Dr., the school will be on your left and the fields are on the right.
We are on the lower field, furthest from the street.

If you are coming down Rt. 1 south, just take Mine Road left, then another left onto Falcon Dr.
Mine Rd. should be your first left after Lafeyette.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! from Pete Murray, former 'Burber and current Rapp RFC player:
"We can't have anyone bring alcohol to the pitch or even break it out in the parking lot after the match. You know how hard it is to get quality pitches to practice on and to play matches on and through dumb luck we got this one on a golden platter and it should be one of the best pitches (as in condition and surface) to play on in the area, so we don't want to piss anyone off at this school. Furthermore this could be the start of a relationship on which we can start building a U-19 program and having dudes breaking out beer on the property would not help. Please pass on the message no alcohol at the pitch to all the guys, young and old. Lastly the post match drink up is about 1/2 mile, if that, away so everyone should be able to hold out.

We contacted North Bay yesterday. They are planning to go forward with this match and said it would take a lot to cancel the game.

SEASON KICK OFF THIS SATURDAY!!!

We will be playing against NORTH BAY RFC at Demarco Park in Aberdeen starting at 1:00. They will definitely have a B side.

Directions to DeMarco Park in Aberdeen:
Off Interstate 95, Exit 85 (Aberdeen, Route 22).
Head East on Route 22 towards Aberdeen.
Left at first stoplight (Beard's Hill Road).
Enter Beard's Hill Shopping Plaza through the 2nd entrance on right.
Head straight back towards Home Depot.
Go right, and follow road around the back of Home Depot.
Continue to the gravel road on the right, follow gravel road to the parking lot for DeMarco Park.

However, there is currently a heavy rain forecast for Saturday, so stay tuned...

We need a few guys to help the caterer get food and beverages from the house to the big tent, to help park cars and with clean up afterward. In exchange, we'll make a donation to the team's general fund, commensurate with the number of bodies and effort (you won't be disappointed). Dress is slacks and Hawaiian shirt, which is easy to change into after the game at Lough Field. Five sober-ish guys is plenty, and they get food and beverages. Let me know if there are any takers. Basically, this is a great way to crash what will undoubtedly be a great party. The expections are carte blanche for mingling! Club guys, please step up.

OLD BOYS: Our 1st match of fall is Saturday, 9/13. Get out when you can to the young'ins practices, bang some rust off, and get ready - we want to make a good showing for the first match of the season. We will field an Old Boys side against Suburbs B's (to get them some playing time and get us some time playing together).

The following is the schedule for the next 2 weeks...

Thursday night - Hennie Van Zyl will conduct a passing and backline play clinic at 6:30 pm at Panzer Pitch - this is for everyone! Please make every effort to be on time.

Saturday morning - 9:00 am at Panzer Pitch: 1.5 hour session per Coach Kris.

Next Tuesday night (8/26) 8 pm practice at Poplar Tree Park; we will be electing field officers (captain and 1 selector).

Next Thursday night (8/28) 6:30 pm practice at Panzer Pitch.

Next Saturday (8/30) is an official "off" day due to the Labor Day weekend.

We need to start collecting dues which will be $100 plus each player must CIPP register himself. Dues for Social affiliation and new players to rugby (not new to Suburbs but new to the game of rugby) are $50 plus CIPP registration. Do not try to CIPP yourself until 9/1 but please do so ASAP after that. A player simply cannot play under the umbrella of USA Rugby for anyone anywhere unless they are CIPP'd. Setanta will not be broadcasting the New Zealand @ South Africa match live tomorrow morning, but they will be showing it at 12:00 noon. Therefore it has been suggested - strongly - by Coach Kris that we meet tomorrow morning at 9:30 am at Panzer Pitch for some bugger, and adjourn to the Wings House in Herndon (13005 Worldgate) for lunch and to watch the match. Summer 7s practices end this Thursday, July 31 at Oak Marr Park in Vienna.
Practice will be held 6:30-8:30 pm. You can check the athletic field status here.

The 1st Fall 15s practice will be held on Tuesday, August 5 at the "Panzer Pitch" at 6:30 pm.
Practices will continue Tuesdays & Thursdays at that time and location until further notice.

Directions to the "Panzer Pitch":
The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that leads to the pitch, which is located under those high power lines.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is a part of the whole practice experience.
9. This is an HOA field and we need to respect the community.

He's back ... BOO DADDY 7s,
our own 7s Harlotfest, will be held Saturday, August 9 at our home pitch at Lough field in Lovettesville, VA.
We're taking a smaller-scale approach this year. Men's bracket only, on 1 pitch, a quick series of matches followed by a 15's season kick-off keg party and cookout. Costs per player $20. Check-in time 10 am. Matches will start at 11 am.
Individual entries only --- Random draw for teams! We supply the playing t-shirts. You supply the sportsmanlike attitude. Since this event is for fun, substitutions are unlimited (whether players are injured or just plain tired).
This should prove to be the best Boo Daddy 7s yet! Winning isn't important, but having a blast is!

Richmond RFC has invited Suburbs to play in their annual Porter Cup 15s tournament which is being held Aug 23-24 this year. However it is limited to the first 8 teams to enter. It's $75 a person, which includes unlimited beverages and the dinner party afterwards. The tournament is at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club, which is in Front Royal. It sounds like a lot of fun, even if you don't golf much. Though I suspect your game golf though will deteriorate as the day progresses. Anyone interested?"

I was chatting with OD today and we came up with a brilliant idea of entering in the Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest 45 and older tournament.
The date of the event is Saturday, Feb 28 - Sunday Mar 1, 2009. This is an easy flight from DC with many direct flights to Miami then a short 30 drive to Fort Lauderdale. This link is being updated so keep watch. This would be a great weekend getaway with the wives. They can go off to do their thing during the day and meet after the games. Tuesday and Thursday practices from 7:00-8:30 PM, on a lighted turf field at "Poplar Tree Park".
Practice consists of playing bugger for the summer months from 7:00-8:30 pm. We are STILL trying to secure Oak Marr as we have in the past for continued summer bugger and training for the players interested in playing competitive 7s.

This coming Saturday is shaping up to be a big rugby day...

As mentioned last week, Saturday, June 7th has been declared Rugby Day in Fairfax County.

Fairfax County will host the First Virginia High School Rugby Championship on June 7, 2008.

Last Saturday, Suburbs U19 defeated West End 13-10 in the playoffs to advance to the Championship Final where they will face Nova.

The event will be held at South County Secondary School (directions here).
Kickoff time 3:30 PM

The doors will open at 11:00 AM. Tickets are available at the stadium: $4 per adult, and $1 per child under 18.

The season is finally here and our first game of the 2008 season (actually, first game ever) will be held on Saturday, June 7 at Stratton Woods Park in Herndon. Kick-off will be at 6:30 pm. Please plan on being there at 5:30. Directions to the field are on the website, in the 'fixtures and results' section.

Please make every attempt to make practice this week as we will be going over the game plan and firming-up starting positions. Right now there are several spots up for grabs and now is the time to impress the selection commitee. It is our hope to name the team on Thursday night, so if for some reason you can't make the game on Saturday please let me know now.

It will be hot on Saturday so there will be plenty of playing time for everyone.

Feel free to invite spouses, friends, family, etc. Several of our sponsors will be there so it would be good to have a good turnout on the sidelines. Post-game party will be at the Wings House, we have a keg of PBR.

Lastly, a lot of hard work has gone into getting this club off the ground and we are finally ready to take the field for the first time. Let's get the team off to a great start and go out and play hard on Saturday. The Slayers are a decent team and will come ready to play. However, I'm confident that we have enough talent on this team to compete with anyone in the AMNRL so let's get out there and give them everthing we have right from the kick-off.

This Saturday is Jim Joseph's bachelor party.
There will be paintball in the afternoon at the A G Paintball Games field near Leesburg. Starting time is 12:30 pm to kit up and a quick safety/rules talk. We will be finished at 4:30 pm. It will be a total of $115 for the refs for the whole group, plus ammo costs for each player. So the more players, the cheaper the cost. If there are 12 players it should be about $20/per person. Ammo cost is $10/500 rounds.

Truth be told we are planning on moving a lot of the boxes and some of the furniture Friday afternoon/evening so if anyone is more available Friday evening please let me know.

I understand a lot of you will be going out to the paint ball field Saturday and need to be there by 12:30PM. For many of you Reston is on the way and it would be a big help if you could stop by for even an hour or two before you go out to the paint ball field to just help move a few of the larger furniture items onto the truck.

Last Saturday night Suburbs played the New York Japan Rugby Club in Manhattan under the lights, in chilly rain at Hudson River Park at Pier 40.
We traveled lightly - only 15 guys - but everyone gave their best effort and pushed through their pain, fatigue, and frustration. The Japanese scored 5 unanswered tries but we didn't give up and came storming back with 3 tries of our own. Thanks to all who made the effort to journey to New York and meet our team's commitment to this match. A blast was had by all - both on the pitch and off - especially at the after-party where the beer kept flowing into the wee hours of the morning. Cheers to our gracious hosts!

from "Eagle" Steve: The Fairfax Eagles are pleased to announce that practice for the upcoming season will begin on Saturday May 10, 2008 at Cub Run School in Centreville, VA (directions will be posted on the website and Fairfax Eagles message board). The school is located at 5301 Sully Station Drive, and we have Field #1. Please plan on arriving at 9:45 for a 10 am start. Practice will run through noon and will be followed by post practice beers at O'Toole's in Centreville. Please let Steve know via email at fairfaxeagles@hotmail.com if you are planning on attending.

This past season F'fax Eagles and WSRFC developed a relationship that is best described as an unofficial, somewhat loose affiliation that hopefully will be mutually beneficial as we try to run successful rugby clubs both on and off the field. We have already benefited thru sponsor, player and field sharing. The Eagles begin the League season th is Sat with practice at 10 am at Cub Run school and the final regular season game is Aug 2. A number of our players have expressed the intention to go out for the Eagles team. Suburbs Alumni match this coming weekend!

Saturday's after match social will be a "Pot Luck" affair.
OLD BOYS: Please bring a covered dish or something to toss on the grill for the post match event this weekend. Come one come all, and bring your family - it's the Club side versus the Old Boys for a friends and family day at Lough field! Jeff Bush is packing the Old Boys jerseys and will be exchanging them for payment at the event. The jerseys turned out great and they will be the uniform of the day.

Club practices this week will be on Tuesday & Thursday from 7:30-9:30 PM, on a lighted turf field at "Poplar Tree Park", so come on out and get a run in. Reintroduce yourself to your teammates and your opposite number before the weekend and just have some fun! Post to the SOBs board whether we'll see you there, and what you will be bringin g.

Coach Kris' analysis of the NOVA match:
"We started the game in great fashion, with good play, support and defence. Our handling was good and our concentration was good. When we made a mistake, we paid dearly for it. Tackling is of the essence, when we miss a tackle, we commit another player to one person and so, create a mismatch of numbers. Kicking was not good, except for one good kick the rest was mediocre at best. Our defence needs to be as sharp as it was in the first fifteen minutes, the whole game long. Individually, some players made great defensive plays, but as a team we were lacking, this however is an easy fix and we will work on it, Thursday. Overall, we had a good game against a D1 team, we should take the positives and build on them and take the negatives and fix them.

"Apologies to those who did not get playing time last nite. I was under the impression we were playing more than 2 30 minute periods and had requested B side time. Having said that, we are preparing for a playoff game so we ask for understanding from everyone. Between the weather and the weak Va Beach turnout, it has been a trying spring season with game time."

This coming Saturday, April 12, We are playing OLD GAELIC RFC in our first playoff match.

WE ABSOLUTELY NEED THE FOLLOWING FROM ALL PLAYERS FOR SATURDAY'S PLAYOFF MATCH: Bring a copy of your drivers license and birth certificate or passport to either Thursday's practice or Saturday's match.

So that we can travel as a team and arrive as a team we will be carpooling from the commuter lot near Poplar Tree with a 9 am departure time. (where we have practiced before...about 1/2 mile south of Poplar Tree park on Stringfellow bordering Rt. 66 on the north side).

Unless you see a posting here stating otherwise assume a normal 1 pm kick off.

Old Gaelic has promised a B-side match.

Directions to Old Gaelic's pitch:
From the South:
U.S. 15 north to Dillsburg.
Turn left at third light (Rt. 74 North).
Go 1-2 miles.
At Exxon station on right, take first hard right (Williams Grove Rd.).

Pitch is up hill and around to the left.

From Matt: "Jack and Luke arrived at 9:30 am last Thursday March 21. Jack weighed 5lbs 10oz and Luke weighed in at 6lbs10oz. We just got back from the hospital yesterday and babies as well as mom are doing well. I on the other hand am a wreck since Gabs is pretty well incapacitated from the C-Section. I am in charge of waste management for these two characters which is a real treat for the senses. It is pretty amazing what these guys can generate but I suppose I've seen worse playing rugby. See ya later and keep me posted on any upcoming SOB stuff."

The match will be the second in a rugby extravaganza pitting two MARFU playoff qualifying teams - Virginia RFC of the VRU and Western Suburbs RFC of the PRU - against each other. The order of play will be Club A-side, followed by Old Boys, then Club B-side.
Everyone who makes the trip WILL PLAY. There will be ample opportunities in the Old Boys match, and there may be additional opportunity at some positions to get some time for the Club Bs.
Again, EVERYONE WILL PLAY - it will be Old Boys' rules: short periods with liberal substitutions.
Let's get this thing going!!!

From Prez Bushy:
1. Coach Kris asked me to post that practice attendance is a key component for him when considering players for selection. To paraphrase his words, I hope there is nobody out there who thinks he can just show up and walk on the A-side, it isn't going to happen. In case you haven't noticed, he is recording attendance.

2. From the exec and field officers, dues are a key component on general principle. As said at the annual meeting, last spring we set a hard deadline and there were few issues, in the fall we had a soft deadline and half the D3 champ game starters didn't pay until the last game day! Before this practice season started we set next Tues 3/4/08 as the deadline. We will push this to Thurs 3/6 which is the last practice day before the first game. Everyone is expected to pay up by then with few e xceptions. For those of you who need some extra time, please talk to us. We understand that there may be some issues for some people but they should be few as everyone seems to have beer money!! Dues are $85 for spring season if you CIPP yourself. For the guys who are new to rugby, dues are $35 if you CIPP yourself. You can also pay dues via Paypal. WSRFC PayPal address for dues: dues@rugbyfootball.com We will be providing the selectors with a list of who has paid. For more info, there is a link on the website - see Club Dues and CIPP.

Directions to the "Panzer Pitch":
The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that leads to the pitch, which is located under those high power lines.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is a part of the whole practice experience.
9. This is an HOA field and we need to respect the community.

From Coach Kris:
1. Thank you everybody that makes an effort to get to practice and works hard to make our club better. It will pay off when we need it most.
2. It is very important, that everybody CIPPs themselves and pay dues.

Directions to the "Panzer Pitch":
The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that leads to the pitch, which is located under those high power lines.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is a part of the whole practice experience.
9. This is an HOA field and we need to respect the community.

The Buffalo Wings House in Herndon (13005 Worldgate) is showing Six Nations Rugby via Setanta sports channel.
FYI - Buffalo Wing House will NOT be showing the matches LIVE...
The Wing House will be showing the games, just not live. The bar has regular Setanta, not the Setanta premium.
The games won't be tape-delay broadcast until 8pm (Wales vs. Italy) and 11pm (Scotland vs. Ireland), with the England vs. France game on Sunday night at 7pm.

Jon Carter reports that if we need another venue O'Connels on King St. in Old Town Alexandria is showing them LIVE and doing $4 - 20 oz Guinness...it is $20 for all 3 matches...

Practice for the Spring 2008 15s season is underway. The first practice was very good with good numbers.

Practice sessions are on a lighted turf field at "Poplar Tree Park" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 PM, and at "The Panzer Pitch" on Saturdays from 10 am - noon.

***NOTE TUES/THURS TIME CHANGE TO EARLIER START OF 7 PM!***

Reminder: we are on a turf field and that studs are not the best choice.

Whoever has any team equipment (tackle bags, balls, cones, etc.) please bring those items to practice.

At Saturday's practice, KRIS SWART was voted into office as THE NEW HEAD COACH!

2 years back, we (Western Suburbs) had the honor of hosting the New York Japan Rugby Club. This was 100% in thanks to Dr. Fred Panzer, who had an old friend who plays for this club. For those who where not there, on April 26, 2006, Doc's friend organized a road trip for his club and, to the shock and horror or Steve's neighbors, Lough Field saw the first New York-based tour bus pull up. Loaded with arms full of Sake, Lovettsville saw a team of Japanese Rugby players and families enjoy a day of international rugby, Suburbs Style.

Well it is now our turn to return the honor. On May 3, 2008, Suburbs has a "Once in a Lifetime" opportunity. The New York Japan Rugby Club has invited Western Suburbs to play in Manhattan under the lights.
So please make sure you schedules are clear for this evening and plan on spending the evening in North Manhattan on the Columbia University Campus playing rugby. This is for your families as well.

"Gentlemen:
The club side initiated its practices in earnest this past weekend under the direction of one of our own, Kris Swart. The training regimen focuses appropriately on fundamentals and fitness and you can guarantee a good workout if you can join in the fun. I would like to remind you that any engagement with the club side is welcomed and encouraged by all - increased numbers afford better drilling opportunities and helps with the training of new players. Further, any additional fitness and familiarity we gain will surely benefit the SOBs on the pitch this season. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Chantilly on a lit turf field. Please come out and join the club for a run whenever you can. Saturday practice is in Centreville at the Panzer Pitch.

Schedules:
We still have a tentative date for the road trip to Charlottesville on 3/8 concurrent with the club side's season opener. I received a number of resp onses indicating an interest in this match, and would like to firm up our expectations of each other before further pressing our welcome on the opposition. Please respond/reiterate your interest/availability in participating in this date's event. I do not know the order of play for the day, but the club side is the visitors in this event, so we will leave scheduling up to our hosts - the Virginia club has expressed some enthusiasm in making it a full rugby extravaganza, and I am looking forward to a good day.

The combined club and old boys sides will be making their annual pilgrimage to the Old South and entering the Savannah St. Patrick's day tournament. Accommodation may be difficult, but where there's a swill there's a sway - check the message board for additional details.

We have received an invitation to play in Norfolk on April 26th for the 30th Anniversary of their club. Norfolk is a bit of a road trip, but it promises to be a good match up if we choose to ac cept. Please respond with your availability and interest in this event, as well.

We will also have additional matches locally, including a potential mini-tournament the first weekend in May (Sunday the 4th) with the Geese and the 'troons. We will also have a separate match against the Geese, and I am hopeful that West Pot and the 'troons will be fielding sides that we can schedule individually, as well.

I will be in Fort Lauderdale this weekend playing in their 32nd annual Ruggerfest with the Geese 45s - if you know anyone in the area have them look us up, as I'm sure we'll be looking to take all comers. If anyone locally is interested in a last minute road trip, I'm sure we can try to assist with coordinating your stay. Please advise.

The annual banquet wil be held Friday Feb 8 at PJ Skidoos starting at 7pm.
Price will be $45 per person.
This will include hors d'oeuvres , bread, salad, entree with side, dessert (chocolate mousse)
and 1 keg to start.

Entrees to choose from are:
1.) stuffed (mushrooms, spinach and cheese) chicken breast in dill sauce with rice.

The map below describes a soccer-sized field near Fred J. Panzer's house.
These directions are a little easier to understand:
1. from Centreville, take Rt. 28 South to Rt. 29 North.
2. take a right on Pickwick Road (at O'Toole's Restaurant).
3. Go straight thru light over Braddock Road.
4. Continue thru a neighborhood -- you'll now be on Little Rocky Run Circle.
5. at stop sign go straight.
6. take immediate right into community center parking lot (or better yet, park
along the road).
7. follow pavement footpath at far end of parking lot thru woods until get to
New Braddock Road.
8. You want to walk across New Braddock Road (you can hear the traffic from the
rec center parking lot) and head to your right a little.
Look for a trail in the grass (NOT a pavement footpath) along the tree line that
leads to the pitch, which is located under those high powe r lin e s.
It's about a quarter-mile walk. The walk and playing Frogger with the traffic is
a part of the whole practice experience.

Hey - I know a few of you live/work in the Arlington & Alexandria area.
Over the past couple of years there has been a real push to develop
Youth & High School rugby in Alexandria.
Alexandria Rugby was recently formed and has been doing some good stuff
to develop the sport and showcase it to youth.

AR has a program set up with O'Connels bar on King St. in Old Town
where they get local Rugby Players and those involved with AR to work a
s doormen on Friday nights from 9pm - 1am...
in return the bar gives a donation to AR for youth rugby.

Annual Club Meeting (Dec. 17) Results:
In a nutshell, we dropped verbiage from by-laws to enable some compensation for a coach (if we have to),
we added a director of youth rugby positon (Steve Lough) but we need to draft the amendment to ratify,
Jeff Bush was elected President, Ryan Findley to Treasurer, all other positions the same.
Head coach is vacant and is top priority.
There seemed to be general strong feeling about no pay no play.
Treasury has a strong balance (report given out and Bushy still has extra copies).

CLUB DRINK-UP!
We are planning a quiet get together for this coming Saturday December 15th and
we would like to extend an invitation to ALL club members past and present,
young and old. However, leave the wives, girlfriends, kids and pets at home.
We will be meeting at the Reston Town Center in the bar at Rio Grande at 8 PM.
Now, I do not want to call this a Pub Crawl but we will be visiting all the bars
(or as many as we can get into) at the town center.
Keeping with the time of the season, the uniform of the day will be
Hawaiian shirt, short pants and Santa hat.
Plan on a taxi ride home or stay at the hotel at the Town Center.
We did this several years ago after a club member's bachelor party
and had a very memorable time.

towards Richmond/Alexandria and continue across Woodrow Wilson Bridge into Maryland.
(approx 23 miles)

2. Take a right on Exit 7A for SR-5 / Branch Ave towards Waldorf.

3. Continue straight on US-301 South into Waldorf.

Description of the Old Boys mini-tournament from Lee Coogle:

A total of 18 SOBs arrived at the dust bowl they call Gravelly Point on Sunday. Our first match (15 min halves) was against West Pot. We scored more than they did. The second time around we took on the Poltroons and I believe we took them 5-0. The whorefest continued with a mixed side of 11 SOBs and Poltroons took on 11 Geese for 7 minute halves. I'm not sure who finished on top of that one but the Geese are taking credit.

I was not able to observe it first hand, but Suburbs won a convincing victory over Pax River. We won 53-5.

B-side game vs. George Mason

We had a Friday night rugby game at George Mason. The play was very sloppy early in the game. Both sides committed a lot of penalties and turnovers. One of our players got a yellow card for excessive off-sides penalties. During the second period we started to get things a little more under control. The Mason guys kept coming at us and applying pressure, but we ended up winning the hard fought match 20-10.

Wes has announced that he is stepping down as the webmaster for the Western Suburbs RFC website. The website is rugbyfootball.com. It is at least as much Wes' website as it is the club's website.

It looks like James Evans is the man to attempt to fill his shoes. I have experience taking care of the website during Wes' brief hiatus and appreciate the size of the job. James needs someone to help him do updates during the day, so it looks like I will be doing that.
